Nuneaton Old Ed's become the second scalp of the New Year for OC's on Saturday

Old Coventrians continue with some fine performances as we endeavour to secure our status as a Midlands 2 West(South) outfit. A great victory over Nuneaton Old Ed's and a significant crowd were treated to some good quality football.
It was a good battle from the start and Old Ed's were first on the score sheet with a penalty goal. They added another after 20 minutes for a six point advantage.
Immediately from the restart OC's put pressure on Old Ed's on their 22 and OC's earn and win the scrum. The ball gets recycled at least ten times as the OC pack grind out a few metres at a time inching ever closer to the OE try line. Back row Tom Clitherow comes up with the ball about 5 metres in from touch on the right. OC's confidence now grows and we make a number of excursions to the OE 22. Old Ed's have periods of possession and they look dangerous out wide but our midfield defence forces a number of handling errors, so, just a one point game at the break. The encouraging part of the game for OC's support is the work rate and desire shown by the boys.
OC's take the lead early in the second period. We get ourselves into a good attacking position about 10 metres out on the right. Declan Misskimmon at No9 feeds it left and some strong running from the back line sees Marc Marren join in from full back to touch down with the help of his long arms.
The pack are providing a terrific platform and there is no wasted ball and from a movement starting on the left sees centre Mark Hyslop crash over following a determined run. So 6 -15 only ten minutes into the second period and OC's are looking in control despite a lot of pressure on the OC set piece.
We then saw the try of the seson when OC's had the put in at a scrum on our own 10 metre line. The scrum wasn't completely settled and No 8 Scott Parry was forced to pick up at the back. He started off left and outstripped the defender before straightening up, leaving would be tacklers in his wake, for a terrific score. Elliot Sheepy made the conversion for a 6 -22 scoreline and more importantly a try bonus point 20 minutes into the half.
Old Ed's were now panicking, after all they were 4th placed in the table at the start of the day. So we saw a bit of frantic play from both sides. A few handling errors form OE's and perhaps some ill advised kicking from OC's. Defences and work rate were great and we had seen some great tries form the boys. Today especially we have to mention the unsung heroes. Ball skills from the pack when carrying are tremendous and the front three of Jamie Phillips, Paul Wilkes and Jim Ryan were enormous today. With that little extra freedom Aaron Tolley and Tom Kimberly at No4 and No5 were brilliant. Great tackles and carries.
In the final quarter OE's upped their game and put considerable pressure on the OC line. In fact OC's saw yellow after a deliberate tap down when OE's were attacking close in on the left. It was during this sin bin period that OE's returned to the scoreboard and went in for a couple of tries to take the final score to 18-22.
Despite a 52 minute second half OC's held on for the victory.
A break from league action next week but OC's are still in the Warwickshire Shied and make the trip to Spartans next week for a quarter final encounter with a kick off of 2:15.

ABUSE OF MATCH OFFICIALS-SANCTIONS 2018: ALL PLEASE NOTE

Please read and note the latest letter from Warwickshire RFU Disciplinary Committee which sets out increased sanctions. Everyone should read this - not just PLAYERS but SPECTATORS and COACHES as well. PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT: SPECTATORS (you know who you are) BARRACKING FROM THE TOUCHLINE CAN INCITE THE PLAYERS. The officials do a difficult job and without them we would not be playing rugby - remember regardless of what you think they are always right - just accept it and quietly walk away. If you get carded you are letting down your team, even more so if you pick up a ban which is now likely to be extremely lengthy so READ about it HERE TAKE IT IN in and REMEMBER IT DURING THE GAME - do not let down your team and club.
