Old Coventrians took the Warwickshire U18 Colts Cup on Monday night when they defeated Stratford at the Butts Park Arena in a thrilling encounter and in front of a terrific crowd.
The final whistle had the boys jumping in jubilation and a tear or two was shed by some emotional parents who have watched these lads develop over the past few seasons. Congratulations to the boys, the supportive parents and the coaches, Paul Donaldson and Neil Sheepy.
Stratford started the game strongly and retained possession for the first few minutes but OC's defence seemed up to the job. OC's spend a little time in the Stratford half with forward drives but Stratford overturn and put a kick into the OC 22. The relieving kick goes straight to a Stratford player in mid field who runs it left and the ball comes to Henri Collins who races down the left and is able to cross and touch down between the posts. Richard Hobbs makes the conversion.
7-0 Stratford after 10 minutes played.
OC's are now playing the game in the Stratford half and drive at the line but are held up and forced out a couple of times. Stratford relieve the pressure temporarily but OC's are back with a 5 metre line out which they take and drive strongly for the try claimed by Elliot Sheepy. The conversion attempt from Sam Hollingsworth was just wide, right of the posts.
7-5 Stratford after 23 minutes.
Stratford string some excellent play together, they are recycling the ball quickly and their backs are only stopped with some last ditch tackling. The pressure produces a penalty right in front and Stratford move further ahead with a Richard Hobbs kick just before the half.
10-5 Stratford at half time.
Stratford begin the half attacking but a penalty attempt from 30 metres out goes awry and OC's run it out to the 22. Further forward drives clears the ball to mid field but OC's are frequently penalised at the breakdown when in possession. However, OC's do get a penalty about 35 metres out to the left of the posts and Sam Hollingsworth slots it for OC's to take the lead for the first time after 20 minutes of the second half played.
Sam kicks another penalty four minutes later following a good drive at a set scrum.
10-14 to OC's.
The four point margin is important because Stratford get a number of penalties but have to kick for position to get the win. OC's survive the pressure and Sam Hollingsworth has the final say with a magnificent drop goal from only 5 metres into the Stratford half.
10-17 to OC's.
A marvellous effort from the whole squad.
Please read and note the recent letter from Warwickshire RFU Discipline Committee which sets out increased sanctions. Everyone should read this - not just PLAYERS but SPECTATORS and COACHES as well. The officials do a difficult job and without them we would not be playing rugby - remember regardless of what you think they are always right - just accept it and quietly walk away. If you get carded you are letting down your team, even more so if you pick up a ban which is now likely to be more lengthy so READ about it HERE TAKE IT IN in and REMEMBER IT DURING THE GAME - do not let down your team and club.
